DEEP DELTA COUNTRY

Another volume in the American Folkways series of regional books, and a good one. Nobody could write the story of the delta country around the mouth of the Mississippi better than Harnett Kane, whose Bayous of Louisiana set a high standard of regional literature (Morrow). Inevitably, the two books overlap -- this one deals more with the place that section has taken in the history of the Louisiana Delta country; the earlier book blends legend, biography, romance, and pattern of living in a very human document. Unquestionably, it is a romantic and picturesque and appealing world in miniature -- a law unto itself -- a segment of America that is a melting pot of many peoples, and a wholly unique way of life.
