POWER TO MANAGE YOURSELF by Harold Blake Walker

POWER TO MANAGE YOURSELF

At first glance this seems to be a book which follows that popular trend in American religious thought which has been called ""the cult of reassurance"". The chapter headings sound notes that are very familiar: ""Get Rid of Your Guilt"", ""Nobody needs to be Nobody"", ""Released from Tension"", ""You can Worry Wisely"" or ""Antidotes for Discouragement"". Familiar also is the author's statement of his purpose: ""This book is intended for those who wish to grow by way of their problems and hurts and find some reason for conquering their own weaknesses and inadequacies"". However in the handling of these subjects the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston digs deeper and unearths a broader and more solid basis for self-mastery than much of the ""peace of mind"" literature that has been published in recent years. Dr. Walker's message is solidly based on the Christian faith as revealed in the Bible and in Christian experience. His points are brought home vividly by illustration after illustration from contemporary life, history and literature. Dr. Walker knows people and knows literature and uses that knowledge with telling effect. A book which every pastor can warmly recommend to those who believe that life has nothing whatever to say to them and which would be handy to have close by when in need of an effective illustration.
