Another collection of folk stories -- this time from Indonesia -- and again the remarkable illustrations by Robert Kane. More sophisticated in moral and development of action, these fables and legends have, nevertheless, the wit and humor of the Ethiopian tales (Fire on the Mountain P. 204). There is the character of Kantchil, the mouse deer, the cocky, sly Punch of Indonesian folk-lore who outwits the beasts of the forest, teases and drives the tiger away from his friend the elephant, and snatches the buffalo out of the crocodile's clutches. There are ""how it happened"" legends and comic tales of men and beasts -- sly lessons in cleverness and presence of mind. Mark this for a limited adult market, too.
