BEHIND BOTH LINES by Harold Denny

BEHIND BOTH LINES

By

Publisher: Viking

A personal narrative of a correspondent's brief war and prison experiences during the last year. Good enough reading -- though of minor importance. Denny was stationed in the Western Desert, witnessed the British attempt and failure to drive into Libya, and was captured by Rommel and turned over to the Italians for imprisonment. From Derna to Rome, where, with the outbreak of war, he became the first American prisoner of war. The Gestapo borrowed him for five weeks and sent him to Germany; he was then returned to Italy and endured discomforts but no drastic hardships -- and eventually returned, under an exchange arrangement, on the Drottningholm. Adequate.
