ALBERT SCHWEITZER

An Adventurer for Humanity

by Harold E. Robles

Pub Date: Feb. 1st, 1994
ISBN: 1-56294-352-9
Publisher: Millbrook

An easy, accessible life of the great humanitarian, with an impassioned afterword. Robles's chronicle is straightforward: Schweitzer's birth in Alsace, the awakening of his social conscience, and his trip to the ``Congo,'' where he began his work at the river mission at LambarÇnÇ; his tribulations during two world wars, one trip to the US, and the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize (he gave his prize money to his hospital for lepers). Notes identify sources for quotes but not for the feelings and thoughts attributed to Schweitzer; nevertheless, Robles takes a name that may be only slightly familiar and serves up a man young readers will admire. Period b&w photos; further reading; chronology; index. (Biography. 11-13)
