RETURN TO CASSINO: A Memoir of the Fight for Rome

The author, who teaches at Dartmouth and whose specialty is English Literature, recently returned to the battlefield of Monte Cassino with his family. He had been there in 1944 as a member of the American invading army and the recent trip impelled this recollection. This is his piece of the battle for Rome and it neither glorifies war nor diminishes the individuals caught up in the execution of a fight they didn't always understand. He sees the Allied liberation of repeatedly invaded Rome as part of the city's ""eternal fight against barbarism"". An insightful, anecdotal record from a junior officer whose assignments encompassed action on the field as well as on General Stack's staff. His special sense of history lends point to the personal stories.
