This seems a sounder book than George Britt's sensational The Fifth Column is Here. Based on studies of the Institute for Propaganda Analysis, Lavine's book is temperate, unemotional. He recognizes the existence of elements of discord fostered by Nazis, Fascists and Communists, but doubts the existence of large bodies of organized workers. He picks individuals (Moseley, Coughlin, McWilliams, Kuhn, Pelley). He doesn't pull his punches or underestimate the dangers, but he refuses to foster undue terrors, red baiting, intolerance. Effective -- caustic -- good reading.
