KIRKUS REVIEW

Three distinguished leaders, representing three major aspects of the community of faith in America call attention to the dynamic challenges being presented each to the other by Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and Judaism. Dr. Marty is Editor of the influential Christian Century magazine. Rabbi Herzberg has his base at Temple Emmanuel in Englewood, New Jersey, and also lectures at Columbia University. Monagnor Moody is a member of the Society of Jesus, and teaches at Ladycliffe College, New York. This is a no-holds-barred discussion of the problems faced by these three religious approaches as they live with each other in the pluralistic setting of America. Does the majority have rights? Is it proper for public society to take on the tone and language of its dominant religious faith? Are all religious observances to be rooted out of the public scene because the faith is not held by all? Such questions, and there are dozens more, occupy these three men as they make their ways through tangled skeins of history, theology and culture. It would be most unfortunate, however, if failure to think the problems through resulted in a needless series of squabbles in local neighborhoods, and legal actions on a large scale which would have the ultimate effect of climinating religion as a factor in public life. This book raises the challenge, does not give all the answers, and leaves believers of every stripe with a better picture of the task in hand if we want to preserve the spiritual foundations of our society.
