THE STORY OF THE PACIFIC

The ""story"" is historical; the Pacific and its territories set the scene. Starting with the early Portuguese explorations in the mid-15th century, the author traces the voyages and the discoveries that were made in that area, the economic and political aspirations that developed as new lands were colonized, the conflicts, (the emphasis is on the social rather than the military) over control that resulted, and the ways that they affected the world power structure. The author has done an excellent job of combining minor incidents and long range trends to illustrate the development of a cohesive overview of a vital territory in modern history.
