An Indian tiger makes the passage from cub to adulthood. Shepherded by his mother, the bright orange stripy cub plays in the tall grass with his two sisters and, when they are old enough, goes hunting with his mother. As he grows, Tiger hunts on his own more and more and sees his mother less and less; and, then, he’s nearly as big as she! One day, he ventures very far from home, noticing a path in the tall grass recently trod by wild pigs and smelling the scent of another tiger. When he spots the other tiger in the distance, he realizes his mistake and runs to a brand new place, with blazing sun, noisy monkeys and fluttering butterflies. This is his new home; he stretches out and falls asleep. Stojic’s gorgeously vibrant paintings, drenched in full-bleed color on oversized pages, lift Blackford’s serviceable text above the ordinary. An author’s note offers straightforward information about the plight of these beautiful wild animals. (Picture book. 3-6)
