A story of Alabama, and of a family where consuming love and the sense of possession ruined many lives. The mother, a widow, played into the hands of her favorite son, and when he brought home a fair girl as his wife, she charged him with breach of a promise never to leave her. The mother and daughter-in-law conflict ended in the mother leaving home and the other sons persuaded her to bring suit against John, her favorite. This brought her emotionally to the verge of insanity -- and we see the disintegration of her mind under the strain. A tragic story with an O'Neill twist to it.
