THE INTERNS

The life of the medical intern, or first-year resident as some are now called, with Babies' Hospital at New York's Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center as a setting and two individuals, Steve Pavlakis and Elaine Choy, as featured interns. (Both are the children of immigrants. Steve is just seven years out of high school and Elaine a 30-year-old former teacher.) Sobol describes the routine and inserts page-long reports on their experiences by Steve and Elaine, while the photos show the two conferring, resting, posing, or conducting patient exams. The pictures give an authentic sense of the hospital environment but don't provide clear shots of the actual procedures; the writing is pedestrian, with some self-evident statements and other, unfamiliar terms unexplained; but the coverage of the always-popular subject will probably put this across.
