THE LIONHEARTED by Harriet May Savitz

Rennie Jackson's exchange of letters with former Rehab Center roommate Carol provides insight into the world as only understood by the physically handicapped, but her daily interactions with high school friends--overweight Bess and Lee, a boy--carry the weight of the message. Rennie, who hasn't walked since a motorcycle accident, struggles with braces because Lee wants her to walk, but gives them up and returns to the (for her) less confining wheelchair; when Lee realizes the depth of his own feelings and acceptance, we cheer a major victory. As in Fly, Wheels, Fly (1970), Savitz stirs awareness of wheelchair occupants' problems and of the wider implications of the word ""handicapped.
