SURPRISE SUMMER

A trial summer in New York City to evaluate her artistic aptitude was blighted for Connie Walters by the treachery of Nicky, the attractive student who uses her to further his artistic ambitions, and by a sudden summons home when her father is in an automobile accident. After her father successfully passes his crisis Connie takes a job as waitress at Honeysuckle Inn. Though she spurns attention from conceited Thomas Egglestone III, a guest, his family complains she is chasing him. Ann, another waitress pockets part of a season's and tip from Miss Atterbury, then implies Connie is the thief. The enthusiastic repsonse to Connie's imaginative story- telling at one of the resort's amateur shows convinces her she should study to write and illustrate children's books. Egglestone clears Connie of blame and local boy, Sandy, promises romance at the close of the season. Connie is a believable girl-next-door type and her experiences mirror those of many teen-agers, vocationally uncertain, exposed to their initial experiences in earning and yearning.
