The time is 1812, the cannons those of the British and Americans, and Niagara the scene of the battles shot with Indian rivalry as well as international misgivings. The Mohawk and Seneca tribes were particularly prominent in the struggle- as the adventures of young Eben Bascom serve to point up, for when the story begins Eben is taken captive by the Mohawks away from his family who have come to settle in York State. Two years with the Indians teaches Eben something other than love for the tribe. When he escapes to Buffalo he is harbored by the Buttons who run a Tavern and here is given his chance to join the American forces, acting as courier for Gen. Porter. Eben's previous experiences prove valuable and the final rewards lead him again to his family. So-so.
