A highly informed, well-organized, extremely realistic and comprehensive discussion of contraception, abortion, sterilization, and artificial insemination is presented for the general, intelligent American citizen by a noted physician who has headed the department of obstetrics and gynecology at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital since 1952. Dr. Guttmacher explains, in concise form and simple language, the physiological conditions and procedures in each area of discussion, in addition to reviewing the religious and legal attitudes toward them in Japan, Russia, India, England, the Scandinavian countries, and the several states in our own country (whose policies differ widely). In each case, the author differentiates between ""legal"" and ""illegal"" as well as standard and personal practices. In order to underscore the concern and responsibility which he wishes to impress upon the general public in these controversial issues, Dr. Guttmacher devotes several chapters to the religious, social, economic, and population complexities involved. A very accurate and up-to-date report strongly recommended for young adults, parents, and would-be parents.
