Chris Talbot, semi-beatnick, all around mixed-up kid, decides to attend ""Cal"" (supposedly the University of California) against his father's wishes (Dad would prefer a small prestige college) for reasons too muddy to understand -- something about ""good school spirit"". Once on campus, Chris goes out for ""crew"" and becomes coxswain. A barroom brawl and suspicious contact with a known bookie puts him in bad light with the powers that be and the realization that he is slipping behind in studies causes him to buckle down. He manages to overcome his study problems and to contribute substantially to the crew, thus making that perfect adjustment to college life. Dad and romance come round also. A superficial and meaningless rambling.
