A versatile man is Harry Golden and his ""forgotten pioneers"" are the peddlers who made trails where there were none. He tells the story of the Jewish immigrants who found in taking up their packs and setting out one way to discover America. Their experiences are told through typical characters drawn from those who carried the packs, sold oilcloth, needles, toys, yard goods and the like through the countryside as well as the cities. Level Strauss' story is one that will have wide interest -- for who does not know the copper studded ""levis"" that still bear his name? This was an accident of fate which saved his investment in denim intended for tents out on the California gold trails. All in all, an odd and appealing segment of American history.
