O. HENRY MEMORIAL AWARD PRIZE STORIES OF 1940

This has it all over the O'Brien British Stories collection, and is a top-ranking anthology, -- drawn from American magazines. High story level this year, with more general appeal than last year's somewhat too lit'ry collection. Stephen Vincent Benet has a Negro slave story; there's a bright bit from Nancy Hale, a moving story of Europe in war time by Kay Boyle, a quietly harrowing story of a small child, by Katherine Anne Porter, and a good roster of names, -- Faulkner, Saroyan, Richard Wright, Grace Lumpkin, Marjorie Rawlings, others less well known, but welcome for the quality of their work (particularly Lull and Havill).
