Through the viscous histrionics, three male basket cases may be dimly discerned--August, Fred and Sammy. Businessman Fred seeks the soul's surcease in managing a boat yard; Sammy, nutty as a fruitcake, attempts to rape his mother and is eventually taken off to the funny farm; August, after a cathartic rap with Sammy concerning some early boyhood sadism, goes down for the third time in the coils of a lobster trap. But with every move adjectively fraught, the boys probably wouldn't have lasted anyway: ""Fred switched off the shower and cut the clinging water with karate-like blows."" In a bath he'd drown.
