BENJAMIN HARRISON: HOOSIER PRESIDENT

This is the third volume of Father Sievers' excellent, exhaustive biography of the 23rd President of the United States and it deals with his years in office. Although one of today's ""forgotten presidents,"" Harrison was a man of great ability and complete integrity and his Administration, sandwiched between Cleveland's two terms, was by no means void of achievement. A believer in human rights and the virtues of a high protective tariff. Harrison, a staunch Republican, defied the party by insisting on civil service reforms in the heyday of the Spoils System. He also attempted but failed to bring the vote to Southern Negroes. An honest, capable president in an era of crooked politics and hand-painted china. Harrison also crowded the White House with relatives, was forced to impersonate Washington whom he in no way resembled, and after his defeat for a second term, turned to the practice of international law. He died in 1901, already half-forgotten. Not for the casual reader, but a scholarly summation with all the necessary documentation and apparatus.
