THE NINE MILE WALK

Testy Nicky Welt, the central sleuth in these eight mystery shorts, has only two factors in common with the author's most popular title figure (Friday the Rabbi Slept Late, Saturday the Rabbi Went Hungry); both men are scholars and both prefer logic to legwork in supplying the answers to crime puzzles. This is a set of solve-it-yourselfs and even though Welt isn't as lovable or memorable as the Rabbi, the stories offer an interesting change of pace and style to mystery fans, currently oversupplied with police method detection concoctions.
