OVERTIME IN HEAVEN: Adventures in the Foreign Service

The nine true stories presented here were selected to disprove the ""striped pants"" myth that pictures all our diplomatic corps in an eternal pose of pomp and cocktail party stances. From James Madison's Minister Barlow and his negotiations with the Barbary pirates to Robert Murphy, the ""diplomat's diplomat"" and other officers in more recent encounters with Castro and the Congo, there is action, duty and dedication. Even if this collection does not dispel every pair of striped pants, it does at least make good reading and good publicity for the deserving principals -- the Foreign Service adventurers.
