Because Mabel lifts a rock off a lizard's tail, she is given the ability to speak to and understand the language of all animals. The experiences which Mabel has as a result of her gift (she tames a wild horse, befriends a wolf, meets some giants, etc.) may amuse young children, if they hear only a chapter at a time. If the text were stripped of the tedious ""little's"", ""very's"", and other weak words, it would have been more pleasurable to read. Structurally, the book consists of several disconnected events which begin and end abruptly. One does tire of six-year-old Mabel whose plight never changes, and whose happy adventures follow a rigid pattern.
