MODEL RAILROADING

Publisher: Knopf

Presupposing an interest in the subject, this might well reach lower than twelve and higher than fifteen, but there is no attempt at any point to write down to a juvenile market. The appearance of the book might indicate that this was the case. The actual text is maturely conceived and developed, highly technical and specifically assuming considerable know-how. Kinds of model trains are first discussed, the meaning of terms (such as gauge, scale, tin plate, etc.) and identification of types of locamotives and cars. Then comes an extensive discussion of power, what makes the engine run, the building of a power pack, step by step, the types of track and how to lay them, track wiring and layout. Available space must be considered in planning the foundation, the inclusion of scenery, buildings, and so on. Making of locomotives and cars to add to rolling stock is suggested and the use of a kit is advised.
