CARTOONS AND CARTOONING

Weiss serves up the history of cartooning and encourages readers to sketch out their own ideas. From the Bayeux Tapestry to Ignatz, he finds plenty of interesting material for this overview, with his own work supplementing the reproduction of familiar comic-strips and characters. The text, intended to be simple and unpretentious, is occasionally flat-footed (""Notice how the feelings of the characters are shown with the very fewest lines""). However, this will certainly help demystify the process and provide easy access and inspiration on the cartoon arts; its heavily illustrated pages should also find friends among general readers as well.
