KIRKUS REVIEW

Good regional collection of Pacific Northwest material, embodying history, reminiscences, autobiography, selections from novels, poetry, etc. The region before the days of the covered wagon, the pioneers, legendary characters, salons, Indians, the tramp printer, the saw, logging, a literary hoax, the salmon, the canyons, rivers, the newspapers -- a panorama that ranges from factual to evocative writing. Writers identified with the region include H. L. Davis, Elizabeth Marion, Mildred Walker, James Stevens, Max Miller, Nard Jones, Haig-Brown, Vardis Fisher, Allis McKay, Alln Hart, Archie Binns William MacLeod Raine and others. The result is a composite picture of Montana, Washington, Oregon, Idaho.
