A rather unique book, vivid, intense, at times eerie, of a year spent on a native island in the South Seas, a year destined to salvage the rapidly skidding marriage of a modern couple. When Judy finds Michael more and more befogged by alcohol and women, the daily rub leading to hostility after hostility, she persuades him to go to the Tahitian island, Tapu, which might change ""their emotional lenses"" and lead them back to normalcy. The strange pagan life, exoticism of the island, legends and superstition of the natives, is recreated extraordinarily, and the juxtaposition of the old and new world is interesting. Not for hand-over-fist sales, but rewarding.
