THE EDUCATION OF PRETTY BOY by Havilah Babcock

THE EDUCATION OF PRETTY BOY

One of the sure fire themes -- a boy and dog -- underwrites its possibilities by making the pedigreed dog a reject (it is gunshy) and the boy, an orphan in Virginia, equally unwanted. The promising pup, pronounced incurable by crack trainers, runs away and finds in unaccepted Kimmie the one he wants to belong to. Kimmie develops a strange method of rehabilitating Pretty Boy and in the progress of the training Kimmie himself grows into actions and decisions that indicate his education too has been successful. Also involved are an old, bibulous doctor, a crippled schoolteacher, dog thieves who take Pretty Boy, a small boy in danger, and a little boy and a little dog, that are all affected by this great hearted dog and his worthwhile master. Not a determined tear-jerker, but an able effort.
