This story- despite its probably sound regional and factual background of the 1880's -- never rings true, either as to characters or story. The Owen family moved from a farm to a little village store in Elmwood, Maine, and the boys, who were taking the cows, ran into plenty of adventure on route. The parents are chary of praise, and the relations seem an odd, unlikely lot. There is much hearty smacking around by Ma; young Steve is of the stuff of which men are made and eventually wins through to the good opinion of all. The villain packs a horsewhip, is defeated; and a zany character turns out to be quite a woodsman.
