AST QUEEN OF HAWII

A departure for Hazel Wilson, whose Herbert books are long- time favorites with the second, and third graders. Her other ventures in the field of biography were more successful than this (Lafayette (1952) and The Little Marquise (1957)). Last Queen of Hawaii presents a stereotyped biography of Liliuokalani in terms of static relationships and drab school days. One feels that Hazel Wilson has culled her information from books, and interjected her own stilted dialogue. The last days of the kingdom and its queen are related in a hazy, disjointed manner, and the author fails to bring her subject into focus. There are other- and better- biographies, specifically Adrienne Stone's Hawaii's Queen Liliuokalani (Messner 1947) which is still the best for this age group.
