The ship actually belongs to Dr. Johann Gebhart, retired rocket scientist who is engaged in his own private project of sending up a one-stage rocket. Herbert, an aspiring young astronaut, manages to befriend the professor, slip aboard the rocket, press a few buttons, and whisk...he is off with a ""Goodbye world. Be seeing you."" He lands on a planet inhabited by intelligent dogs--""Ill be doggoned""; is carried off to the zoo; proves he is smart enough to become a pet, then becomes a scientific project and ends up as the planet here after saving dogdom from their enemy, the wolves. In the interim he teaches them baseball, scouting, etc., and has a bout with a mad dog of a scientist. Meanwhile, the ship has returned to earth via automatic pilot and help is on the way. Finally, Herbert is the first to have ""gone to the dogs and come back."" Good for a yap from young pups.
