KIRKUS REVIEW

Polly can't get dressed for school because there's a witch in the bedroom, a vampire in the bathroom, a ghost in her shoes, and a werewolf on the stairs--all of which she demonstrates with quickly improvised props. Mum's response is hardly sympathetic: ""Rubbish!"" ""Fiddlesticks!"" Even ""Balderdash!"" But when Mum visits the offending sites, she too sees the fearsome creatures--which are later revealed, in Polly's company, to be composed of such items as mops and spookily deployed garments. With their clever visual double-entendres, Ross' vigorous, cartoon-style illustrations are more than half the fun of this lighthearted exploration of the uncertain boundaries between the real and the imaginary in a child's world.
