ROUMANIA UNDER KING CAROL by Hecor Bolitho

ROUMANIA UNDER KING CAROL

This is an excellent example of wishful thinking putting into concrete form. For here is Roumania glorified, seen through rose-colored spectacles, an unqualifiedly eulogistic view of a country which now stands in a strategic position. Bolitho's purpose is to spur England on to cementing relations with this wonderland. He does it by showing how, in the interval of a year between visits, Roumania has emerged triumphant, King Carol and Prince Michael have put over social and economic reform, the youth movement is under way, the Jewish question has been smoothed over, even the oil concession to Germany has been nullified by strong talk from Carol. It is such a big puff for the country that one's sensibilities are suspicious, while one's appreciation of the charm and beauty and romance is stimulated.
