Hauser, novelist and writer, returned to Germany to make an extensive survey of Hitler's Reich for Fortune, amplified here in a detailed yet fascinating ""inside Germany"". It is not as personal book as Nora Waln's, nor essentially as popular, but it is as good a background book for a balancing of the debits and credits of today's Germany as has appeared. Hitler's rise to power, his handling of the labor surplus to create a labor shortage, the Four Year Plan with the synthetic compounds put into use to replace natural resources, the motorization and militarization of Germany, programs for youth, for the peasantry, the elimination of the Jew, etc. Statistics and examples from everyday life evenly combined to make an informative and readable study.
