NIGHTG OF AN OLD CHILD

An interesting, though depressing theme -- the story of one of those German youths who had no chance at normal childhood, who grow up in an unreal world and never found reality. At odds with society from the start -- a rebel who knew not at what he rebelled -- condemned by poverty, lack of affection and understanding, to a furtive life, stealing his pleasures, magnifying his punishments, the central character sank lower and lower in the human scale. Germany -- America -- Germany again. A succession of methods of earning or stealing a slander living. At the end, almost accepting oblivion, and then once again clutching at hope...Viewed as a human document, it has a poignancy and vitality that it lacks as fiction. Should advice selling as non-fiction, in which field it makes a (definite) contribution to a social picture.
