IN HER OWN HANDS

Publisher: Bobbs-Merrill

Gently appealing story of Susabeth of Virginia, Susabeth who is meek and subdued but determined not to face the opprobrium of spinsterhood as her Aunt Lutie did when she lost her fiance in the Civil War. She gets a first lesson when at the age of ten she loses Jimmy Perkins and a dish of ice cream to Freda. Again -- when she is engaged to Jimmy, Freda lures him away. Twice bitten, Susabeth decides to become a New Woman, takes to a bicycle and a typewriter, gets a job -- and lands a husband. Nice.
