TADPOLE HALL

Altogether gracious and charming, this story of gentle, retiring Colonel Heron and his home, Tadpole Hall, the leisurely tradition they both represent and the incursions which war brings. The contradiction between present and past are gracefully pointed up, as the outside world invades the Colonel's seclusion; his daughters, one who comes to stay, one who has a turbulent wartime marriage; evacuees; and the Austrian refugee couple who come to work and whose story it is. The Colonel falls in love with the friendly, childlike, and indefatiguably willing Lisel, and she finds a home.
