A STONE UPON HIS SHOULDER

A young Arapaho caught between two civilizations has first been brought up as son of a white Army couple in the East towards the close of the last century. When he is ordained a minister, he returns to his native Wyoming, hoping to find his mother, lost in a bloody raid by an enemy tribe, when he was a child. He finds her, but she is alien to him, yet he does not feel free to claim the love of a white girl who loves him. Then his conflict is heightened when he encounters the ruthless Indian who had killed his father -- and realizes that the face that had haunted his life is that of a recently converted brother in Christianity, and -- if he lives up to his faith- vengeance cannot be his. A primal law of his tribe is rejected. He accepts the dictates of his Christianity -- and still rejects the love of a white woman, until she comes to him, determined to share his life. The issues are there- but the people and problems do not quite come alive.
