A story of Maine in the days of sailing ships recreated from diaries, letters, and ship logs of the Pennell family, poetically told (as one would well expect) but lacking the force of Mary Ellen Chase's books, or Rachel Field's Time Out of Mind, since the story angle is subdued. Through storm, hurricanes, war, earthquake, illness and mutiny, Abby Pennell kept house on board for her husband, Captain John, bearing him two sons, and losing one in strange waters. A vivid picture of the times, a rather appealing picture of lifelong devotion, with occasional touches of humor and a consistent lyrical quality. For those that must go down to the sea again, primarily, and the author's name may add to that number.
