KIRKUS REVIEW

The land of promise in this case is Canada, and here is that nation's complete history illustrated with line drawings and photographs. The book is fairly detailed, outlining the discovery and settlement of this northern section of the New World through the year 1800. How the native Indian tribes lived, the adventures of the early explorers, the vital roles of fur traders and missionaries, the lives of the French colonists make up the bulk of the story. Two wars are described carefully, both pertinent to Canadian history, the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Though this topic is not a major concern in general high school curricula, students interested in American history will find the story illuminating.
