This starts out as a biography of Mable Hubbard, one of the first children to the art of lip reading and avoid sign language -- and continues as a biography of Alexander Graham Bell, her most influential teacher and later her husband. The absence of sound in Mable's world never inhibited her deep participation in life. Her years with Aleck are traced from their courtship through all his inventions, his association with Thomas Watson, the long period before public acceptance and acclaim, the birth and growth of their children, their many varied travels. Despite the accuracy of research, and the attention to detail, the book lacks imaginative styling and the result is almost editions.
