This is as helpful and constructive a book in its field as I have seen. The range of contributors and the scope of topics should meet the need and interest of aspirants to writing fame. Novels (contemporary- historical-mystery), serial writing for the slicks, writing for the pulps, short story writing, writing for children, special articles, screen, radio and television writing, dramatization -- each subject discussed on two levels of interest, the reader, the writer. Now and again, the editor includes selected passages from some creative work, that contribute to the clarification of some phase or other of writing (for example there are passages chosen from Thomas Mann's Progress of the Artist, from Koestler's Insight and Outlook). Some of the contributions are worth reading for the quality of thought and style, as, for instance, Jacques Barzun's piece. The artistic slant, the critical, the practical, the commercial- all are presented in concrete terms by successful writers.
