This Junior Literary Guild selection is one of the most natural, friendly, appealing farm stories, full of kindness and family love. It is often reminiscent of The Yearling especially when Jobie discovers his vixen and her young, when he sees the heron, and when his beloved Blossom appears with her new calf. The simple, delights of real country life are found on every page. Dad has no desire for a car, and the family lives on peacefully at the top of a long hill, until there is a short visit from a snotty city boy who is aghast at the lack of improvements. But the next visitor is Charlie the Hermit, a helpful soul who pitches in to bring their wishes true. He rebuilds the barn after the fire for Dad, he leads Jobie to his own pond, he assists Philip in starting his orchard, and he brings the orphaned Georgette to Ma.
