STRING PROJECTS

Fletcher offers a short illustrated page or two on each of 28 simple, diverse projects -- a braided and a knotted belt, a woven mat, a scribbly picture made by pressing and/or pulling inked or tempera-coated string on paper, etc. The directions are minimal -- for ""string modeling"" you simply ""twist, turn, pat and poke a mass of glue-covered string into a Buddah or some other squat, bulky shape"" -- and the string itself often incidental (as in the silly toy caterpillar made essentially of plastic straws, foam ball and pipe cleaners) or superfluous (the bulletin board project consists of winding twisted string around the edge of an existing bulletin board and fastening it with ""decorative tacks""). As Fletcher provides no detailed instructions for macrame, sprang, string figures, geometric designs or any of the other crafts she tosses in, we'd judge this collection of odds and ends too short to save.
