PICCOLA

A segment of childhood, which is artlessly appealing, in the story of serious, speculative Piccola, left in a convent in Italy at the death of her Italian mother, and only remotely aware of the world beyond those walls. She is taken from the convent to live first with an uncle, then with her Italian grandparents, and finally with the American artist-father, whose desertion earlier she comes to understand as she senses how deeply he was affected by her mother's death. They go to America and settle in a New England village, and gradually -- and painfully -- Piccola makes the transition to a new life and a new world. Relatively contemporary in period.
