Harriet Sutton, part-time writer and widow of a Navy officer, decides to settle in Boston, buys a house, converts it into apartments, and rents them to other writers. Among the tenants: ""Nemesis,"" who pens caustic book reviews for New Parnassus, a tony Boston magazine, and whose true identity is a well-kept secret. And those reviews will play a part in the sleuthing when Helen's lawyer is found mauled to death in her apartment. The obvious suspect, sadly, is Harriet's son Tommy, who has a history of blackouts and restless wanderings. But never fear--because the detective here is Dr. Basil Willing, fastest psychiatrist in the East, who ferrets out the secrets of all the tenants, discovers the identity of Nemesis, pinpoints the killer, and is soon on the way to effecting a cure for Tommy. Mildly diverting nonsense for those not put off by McCloy's graceless style.
