Not exactly important or revealing, but pleasant behind the scenes pick-up information of the social backdrop for today --and yesterday. A Washington hostess, wife of an official of the French embassy before Vichy and an opponent of the Vichy regime, an American by birth, she is now free to ""tell all"". (Or almost all). From 1925 to the present, the enfilade of ambassadors, a personality parade of the social gestures behind the scenes, high spotting some of the big social diplomatic events. The Royal Garden Party at the British Embassy which almost severed Anglo-American relations; the teacup defeats and the German Embassy; the Soviet Salon; etc.
