BLACK HORSE OF CULVER

One of the better horse-and-boarding school stories accented by moral regeneration in horse and boy. Bruce Brownley, in his first year at the famous Culver Military Academy, and Storm Cloud, the unmanageable black horse at the school, were both outcasts. However, through an experiment in which Bruce proves that a horse may be trained by kindness, he earns the respect of his teachers and the other boys. Bruce still has a lot to learn, however, when the next year he transfers his humiliation, engendered by the harsh nagging of his father, to the plebes at the school. Like Cloud, Bruce learns the rules of balanced behavior, and achieves high riding honors and popularity his last year through generosity and good humor. Father comes around too.
