Sixteen year old Anna Reichert feels permanently marked by the single fat traid which hangs down her back; she fights being thought of as an old-fashioned-German-American girl. When the Reicherts, who are noticeably trailing their neighbors financially, move from New York City to a suburb, Anna makes friends slowly. She begins dating the smooth playboy--who is realistically portrayed as not totally unlikeable-- until an incident on a rainy night causes her to look at him from a different perspective. The story moves along quickly, and although sentimentalism wanders in occasionally, it is better than the average book for young girls.
